Mimeograph Stencils

Stencils are created to make exact replicas of an original shape. Mimeograph machines were created to make multiple copies of an original literary stencil.

Mimeograph machines, also called stencil duplicators and mimeos, are printing machines used to make copies of a hand-prepared stencil. Mimeos were commonly used in the early 1990s by teachers to make copies of tests and notes.

The mimeograph stencil is made from a pliable piece of mulberry paper. It is bound to a piece of carbon paper and a stiff card. To create the original stencil, this combination of papers is put into a typewriter. The typewriter letters will then strike the wax, making the paper permeable. This means when the wax is added, it will only dye the areas where the typewriter letters have displaced the wax.

The mimeograph machine has a rotating drum and a pressure roller which work simultaneously to create the copy. The stencil is wrapped around the ink-filled drum. When a blank sheet of paper is placed between the drum and roller, the ink goes through the spaces in the stencil where the wax has been displaced.

Many mistakes can be made when using a mimeo, such as a backwards stencil or bleeding ink. If a mistake is made on the stencil, correction fluid is painted on the paper over the mistake. Once the fluid dries the letter or word can be re-typed. It can be an extremely messy process for people who have never used a mimeo.

Mimeograph machines are still used as a less expensive and faster alternative for copying numerous papers. However, newer machines, such as the photocopier, are easier, cleaner and give the user a higher quality copy. Technological advancements have caused the mimeo to decrease in popularity. Photocopiers are much more efficient, as they do not require a stencil to be made.

Though mimeograph machines have diminished in popularity, they can still be appreciated as the original photocopier. It is always nice to pay homage to your ancestors!
